In Chinatown I had a great time. One of the awesome things I saw was a chinese chess set. The pieces were very detailed, they were beautiful. The pieces looked like what it would be in real life. For example the knight looked like a horse. I wish I had gotten one.
Another thing that was awesome was the guy in the santa hat playing a chinese instrument, an urshu. It sounded a lot like a violin, but louder. It had only two strings and had a big opening for the sound to come out. I'm sad that we didn't get to go into the Clarion music store because there must've been other cool instruments.
I had a great time with my friends!(Tristan photo bombing us in the background. Also Kate has a thinking face on.)
I also liked the erhu. It had a very beautiful sound.
ReplyDeleteThe Erhu was beautiful. Side note: the Erhu is a chinese violin, which is why it sounds so much like one!
ReplyDeleteGreat pictures! I heard a number of musicians as I walked around in my free time.
ReplyDeleteI don't know why I had that face on, I can't remember what I was doing then. The erhu guy was either VERY nice just because, or he knew we were going to pay him a lot, because he was the nicest SF guy I saw in Chinatown.
ReplyDeleteWhatever you were doing, you looked funny in the photo!! :D
DeleteI love photobombing! Anyways, I also had a great time with my group. I didn't get to see the Santa guy, but I know what a violin sounds like, so I can picture it in my head. About the Chinese chess board, it looked very fascinating and it would have been cool to buy one, but they were selling for more money than I had even brought.
ReplyDeleteI didn't bring enough money either. The mini sets were $45 and the big sets were $70.
DeleteThe photo is really funny! :D i also wish we got to go to Clarion, but if we did we might not had been able to do all of the other cool things. Like going to the Golden Gate Bakery, the Nike store, and see the santa hat guy play his Erhu. I recently went to San Francisco, and I was edited to drive through China Town and show my mom all of the cool places we went.
ReplyDeleteP.S. Is it Urshu or Erhu???
It is an Erhu. A Chinese instrument with not one, but two strings. A lot of people thought it only had one string. The Chinese word for two (2) Is Er.
DeleteErhu
ReplyDeleteI love the architecture in China town too.
I think the way they express their innner "color" on their buildings and homes
By the way, I was talking to Kate and asking her what kite was her favorite, so that is why she had the thinking face on.
ReplyDeleteThat makes since. Which one was her favorite?
DeleteI think it was the dragon one, or maybe the box kite. I can't really remember.
DeleteI love the place in general but does anyone agree with me that the "ghost" was really weird I mean that is one of the many things that I remember. Chinatown was just so fun in general I love everything about it. who was grossed out by the turtles that was a little weird wasn't it. if you agree reply with your response.
ReplyDeleteThe following comment is not from me, but from Malcolm: I'm disappointed about not going to Clarion, too. I didn't see the erhu guy, but I, too, can imagine the sound. As for the chess set, I wish I could have bought one, as it looked very beautiful and ornate.! :)
ReplyDeleteThis is my reply to what Malcolm has said: Yeah, I wanted one of those chess sets too!!! Even though I already have like... I don't know... five of them. It would have been cool to have on of those though.
DeleteBTW: That comment up there was really from Malcolm, but he had trouble commenting, so I had done it for him. It really was from him. This one, just so you know is from ME, Joshua KIang!!! And I am commenting on the comment that Malcolm wanted to comment with, but could not comment because of technical difficulties, so I commented for him AND (I do know this is totally a run-on sentence) I am commenting on it, even though I sent it!!! Very complicated.

DeleteIt is confusing. I'm confused.
DeleteThat picture is super funny. I was mad disappointed to because since I play an instrument wanted to see the instruments that are played in the Chinese culture.
ReplyDeleteI remember seeing Tristan photo bomb you guys and later told us! I never saw the instrument playing Santa or the chess set, lucky you.
ReplyDeleteI can totally picture Kate having that face! That's hilarious that she unknowingly photo-bombed you guys! And I agree, the guy playing the urshu was very nice! I remember fishing into my pockets for any change, and I only had 50 cents... I felt kind of bad, because everyone else was giving him a dollar... but oh well.
ReplyDeleteI loved going to Chinatown, too. It was awesome going there, away from school.
ReplyDeleteWho took that picture???
ReplyDeleteMs. Mills took the picture with Tristan and Kate photo bombing,
DeleteI really liked seeing "Santa." When we went earlier my group even took a picture with Uncle Lee(that was his name.) His instrument was awesome!!!!!
ReplyDeleteThe Erhu must be one of my most favorite items. It incorporates 3 of my favorite things, music, violins, and Asian things! Tristan must be a very skilled photobomber, not even I could do that.
ReplyDeleteThese are such great pictures!!! It makes me remember what a fabulous time we all had, and all of the amazing things we saw, like beautiful interments, "interesting" groceries, and delicious food. I am so glad we went!
ReplyDeleteThese pictures make me feel like I'm there again, and I'm very happy to see them. I took a lot and I even took a video of the two-stringed instrument. You couldn't hear it to clearly, because a lady was screaming at me, and I couldn't understand her at all. (P.S.... I'm a ghost!!!)
ReplyDeleteI remember that chess set. I heard about that guy and Tristan photo bombing Ha Ha
ReplyDeleteI loved Chinatown, but I'm sad the "ghost" is all some people remember.
